12 weeks ago, at 41 weeks pregnant, my baby turned breached at the last minute, setting off a series of challenging events including a 2-week hospital stay, a multi-day labor and an epic, exhausting, and empowering beginning to motherhood.

The last few months have been the most full, sleep-deprived, joyful, physically challenging, humbling, love-filled and identity shifting that I’ve ever had. My expectation of what I would be capable of and when I’d be “adjusted” after having a baby were far from how reality has played out.

As a solopreneur, having a baby didn’t include paid maternity, or a team of others to keep things afloat while I was home recovering, yet, I made the decision to fully put work aside for three months...something I realize many self-employed women don’t have the option to do.

This week, would traditional be when maternity leave would end for a US employee, and therefore when I planned/expected to be jumping back into my business. Truth is 12 weeks just isn’t enough time - women need longer to recover physically and mentally, our babies need us longer.

So, since I’m my own boss, and I believe families/women deserve better, I’ve decided to let myself take additional time to heal, adjust, bond, and live into my new identity as a mother. I’ll be back creating in some capacity in the months ahead, but for now I’m focusing on the hardest job I’ve ever had...being a mom.

My baby decided to stay put past his due date so I wouldn’t miss the inspiring @strawberryswingkc killing it this morning, sharing her story about her eclectic life and meaningful work building inclusive creative communities here in KC at @cm_kansascity

I’ve been pretty quiet on social media lately...that’s because I’ve had my head down busy working and preparing for what is to come...spoiler alert...it’s going to be a busy fall 😊I’m happy to share the update that while growing a business (and helping others grow their businesses) this year, I’ve also been growing a baby!🤰🏼

Pretty much takes the idea of being a “maker” to a whole new level!😂

It’s been quite an adventure - and admittedly the most challenging and also amazing season of life to date. The past 8 months have been a crash-course in learning how to truly prioritize, be flexible and most of all letting go and giving myself grace and patience. It’s been months of accepting that goals and ambitions had to be reworked and reimagined, as the demands of a changing body - that is working hard making a baby - has forced me to move at a much slower pace and in a whole new way then I’m used to.

I’m humbled and inspired by all you business-owning moms that have come before me, and look forward to joining you in the years ahead as I navigate caring for a baby and running a business. Much more to come! Thank you for your support and encouragement ❤️
